We were guests at a two year old birthday party last weekend, where Steve took these great polaroids of the birthday girl. One standing on the porch of her new cubby house, and one where she was whisked out of the sandpit to pose for a photo. These images look like they could have come out of a family album from the 70's and although I was there in person, I can't help but keep looking at them for proof of 2010. Even the hula hoop in the grass throws me off track. Sometimes nostalgia can be sad but in this case I find it reassuring that little, old school hero's like sandpits, cubbie houses and backyard birthdays still remain.

Well it was kind of true, these little angels were on a side table at a family Christmas gathering. Whilst surrounded by at least a dozen other angels of varying sizes these 2cm high darlings stole the show. Good things, small packages, and all that. Happy Christmas!

In fact lets call them sins - plural - can't remember what they are, so all seven of them. I ate 16 pieces of mini baked cheesecake in less than 5 minutes. Am now in purgatory waiting for my punishment, by that I mean fat, to be handed down to my ass. Beware the "mini" food groups....you have been warned.

My Litty Bitty Bins in the 80's meant to me no doubt what Tupperware meant to my mum. Best, coolest storage ever! Since coming across these a few weeks ago, stored in boxes in my parents garage, I have refreshed the contents (which was knuckle bones, jacks and dice...aw...cute) with more little things, and welcomed them to 2009 with their very own desk space. Prime real estate if you're a plastic storage container. Now we just wait for the novelty to wear off for a second time.

Public display of affection - ugh! I wrote this note out of delicious little lolly letters I purchased at the Remarkable Sweet Shop in Arrowtown, NZ. Don't want to eat too many as want to keep writing notes! (already down to one letter E, had to use upside down F).

A couple of days ago here in New Zealand I purchased a mini snow dome. This turned out to be quite a satisfying experience - similar to that I imagine of a bug collector, with all the excitement of having snared a piece of the living universe for your own dissection or examination at a later stage. Without a net $4.90 was all it took to capture my own little ceramic and styrene, made in China piece of New Zealand, and I couldn't be happier than if I'd shrunk the kiwi's, embalmed them and put them in a glass orb myself. Let it snow let it snow let it snow...

Candy Cane Vodka is the new Milk & Cookies

Santa doesn't need more milk, his beard is white enough. From now on give Santa the 'spirit' of Christmas and serve up a mini bottle of vodka infused with a candy cane. It's sure to put the cheers into Christmas cheer!

Hoping to See Monkeys - RIP

Shortly after Jack and Diane were photographed happily playing in their tank, someone thought it would be a good idea to change their water and subsequently placed them back in their tank with a fresh batch of tap water. Sea Monkeys people...not Tap Monkeys! Jack and Diane are no longer with us but we enjoyed every minute we spent standing around their tank avoiding work and will forever remember them as a constant distraction.

Spy Cam - Part 1

At only 8cm in length this little baby is basically a glorified key chain, but this really enhances its secret squirrel ability to discreetly shoot where no camera has shot before. Each neg is a mere 1.3cm x 1.7cm and from this you could expect regular 5" x 4" prints. First film cartridge is on its way to the lab as I type! To be continued...

Hoping to See Monkeys - Part 2

It's been 6 months since I started hoping to see monkeys which has literally been a lifetime for the Sea Monkeys in question. Perhaps 20-30 Sea Monkeys hatched all that time ago and have since passed on. As of today only Jack and Diane remain. I'm quite fond of them now there are only two, especially as they are distincitive in appearance and also seem to display different behaviours...who would have thunk?? Jack is larger and seems to have some extra junk in his trunk (little darker bits near his tail) and he's always on the go. Diane on the other hand is cuter and more petite and she's kind of lazy - I dig her vibe. Further to my surprise of actually caring that they're still alive I'm now hoping they'll make baby Sea Monkeys!

Little Noush - Now & Then

At a Halloween party this year we invaded the photo booth - little noush dressed as Harry Potter(ette) - and came home with photographic strip reminders of a crazy night. My only other recollection of having photo booth photos was when I was little and even then I don't remember the actual event, just that the photos still existed somewhere. So....I tracked them down...little Little Noush (left) 1982 with one time friend Natasha. It's worth keeping the little things me thinks.

I've been feeling bad for not posting for so long particularly because, in terms of small things - two new babies have been born in my world this month and another two are on their merry way next year - I am in awe of these mums/mums-to-be who manage to throw caution to the wind, whatever their circumstance and embrace motherhood. I say this with respect to their own lives and careers - which can be complicated and all-consuming - yet the amazing space they have created for the new loved-ones is unfathomable and admirable...not to mention adorable! Gourlay randomly shot this photo out and about and thought of it pertaining to my blog, and whilst it was cute in perspective I wasn't sure until now how to give it words. Little as I have...Terri (and baby Charlie) and LJ (and baby Erica) and Ange and Claire...with this mini boot I salute you!

Happy Southern Hemisphere Spring!

My plan for celebrating the first day of Spring was to enjoy my morning coffee in the sun followed by a stroll around my local Prahran hood in search of wild daffodils or the like to shoot a photo of. Alas the universe had other plans for me and instead I woke up on the first day of Spring to day 5 of the flu and raindrops on the roof. On the second day of Spring and feeling much better I couldn't bring myself to attempt what should have been done the day before like I had missed the magic of the moment. So instead, I bought $5 bunches of Spring from the local markets in the form of jonquils and daffodils and documented the moment indoors, alongside a furry assistant, who told me that Spring is her favourite time of year.

The anticipation of spotting a Sea Monkey is like staying awake in the hope of catching a glimpse of Father Christmas or the Tooth Fairy - but way less exciting. Unless of course the end result produces actual miniature monkeys which swim and play all day and eventually escape the tank and run riot in the studio, instead of sperm in jar which I'm predicting - then it will be worth the wait. Mini Cupcake Love

I've recently applied the "I'll have a beer for you" theory - i.e when you can't be with someone on their birthday/celebration etc to "I'll eat a cupcake for you". Probably healthier - although I did manage to get edible glitter in my eye. So this weeks mini cupcake, which can sit on 20c piece ($AUD) is dedicated to July birthday peeps - to having your cake, no matter how small, and eating it too!

Minox Digi and I first met on an Emirates flight to NZ after spotting each other across the duty free trolley. I tried to resist the Minox charms, 5 mega-pixels and a Leica M3 impersonation to boot, but once I held him in the palm of my hand the bond was sealed. He doesn't have a flash so our dates thus far have been limited, but we're working on getting him out more. He doesn't have a great memory either, so no doubt he's forgotten our anniversary but either way I propose a small tribute to my favourite little camera Minox DCC Leica M3 - may you forever be wrapped around my little finger. x
